Property | estimated 1745 | Fishpond Creek, Appomattox, Virginia | Fishpond Creek, Land Grand 1760 | |
Event Note
Based on 300 acres Moses received at Fishpond Creek and the practice of 50 acres per person, there were six people in Moses' family: Moses, Sarah, and four children: Elizabeth, John, Mary, and William. William was born in 1745 and the next child, Thomas was born in 1748; so, the grant was applied for after William was born in 1745, and before Thomas was born in 1748. Land Grants were given: 50 Acres for head of house, 50 Acres for wife, 50 Acres per child. Moses received his land grant of 300 Acres on Fishpond Creek in 1760; there were six persons in the family. He applied for this land grant after William was born in 1745, and before Thomas was born in 1748. This places the Moses Helm family in Virginia prior to 1754. |

Narrative
There are several myths told about Moses which are easily disproved:
Myth 1, Moses was not an engineer in charge of building a road. The document referenced is a standard road maintenance document listing the men of age who owned property in the area of the road, or whose land the road goes through. Further, the road refered to is mentioned several times in earlier records in Virginia.
Myth 2, Moses gave the property for the first Old Concord Presbyterian Church, when in fact a Presbyterian Minister, Reverend John Thomas preached at Hat Creek and [Old] Concord in 1739. [per Journal of the Presbyterian Historical Society, Vol XX December 1942 and March 1943 "The Reverend John Thomason".]
Moses arrived in Virginia after 1739.
I can find no record of Moses or any immediate family member associated with Old Concord Presyterian Church, except later by marriage. There is more proof of association with Baptists as a Baptist minister performed marriages for the family. In addition,
Myth 3, Moses abandoned the family and was last seen walking north, and Sarah had gone crazy, is pure fabrication. A document supposing James had traveled from Tennessee to Virginia and learned Moses had disappeared and his grandmother Sarah cannot be true. In fact James did not leave Virginia until after both, his grandfather and grandmother, had died. He bought part of the property that had been Moses' in 1800, and he first moved to Georgia in 1804 before moving to Tennessee in 1818.
Myth 4, Moses' and Sarah's children had middle names, and they were given the names of neighbors in Bedford County in Virginia. I have never found any documentation of such between 1700 and 1950. The earliest middle names appear 200 years after they were born, and is rampantly repeated over the internet.
Narrative
1782 John Helm and Sarah Helm pay the taxes on "Moses Helm" property in a ratio of 2/3 and 1/3, in keeping with practices of the time. John paid tax on the known properties and Sarah paid tax on an additional 200 acres I do not know the location of (MEANING Moses owned an additional 200 acres no one has located as of yet.) I suspect the property is part of property survayed on Falling River and later sold by John's son.
Narrative
1789 John Helm sold 300 acres in Buckingham County Virginia to Edward Petteson. This property is the 300 acres Moses Helm obtained by grant in 1760, as that property was at the time in Buckingham County and would later become part of Appomattox County.
Narrative
1800 John Helm sold 194 acres on the headwaters of Reedy Creek to his nephew James Helm. This included the 154 acres Moses Helm purchased from Thomas Leerwood in 1757, and the 40 acres property surveyed in 1767 and granted in 1780.
James divided the property and sold a part of it to his aunt (Moses' daughter) Jane Helm.
The propery was then sold as part of Jane's estate settlement. Thomas Dixon was the highest bidder and purchased Jane's properperty in 1826.
In 2010 the property was owned by ... and his deed was "identical" to that of Moses
Narrative
Look up research: Sarah Helm paid taxes on A, 1782-1804, what did she pay taxes on 200 acres?
John sold Fishpond property was in Buckingham Co, to Patteson in 17..
John sold Reedy Creek property was in Bedford/Campbell Cos, that to James in 1800
And in/after 1804 200 acres transfers to John
widows dowry is 1/3 of land; given the known property is sold and Sarah is still paying taxes for several years; this implies Moses had another 200 or more acres, location yet unknown.

A list of tithables from the mouth of Falling River upward [includes Reedy Creek] for the year 1748 taken by John Phelps
Aquilla Gilbert 1 [not listed in following years]
[note of interest: there were numbers for Scalps and Heads. Some websites where people are presenting information about their relatives say these were "pests: squirrels and crows". In the 1760 lists do begin to include the words "squirrel scalps" and "crow heads" ... 1749 most had 6 scalps, some had 12 scalps, and a few had 5 heads.... 1760 there were significant increases in the number of scalps, some having 36, 42, 54, 60, and a Jefferson family had 84 scalps. [The number of scalps increases with the French Indian War...]]
