James Carter married Mary Essex December 27, 1820 in Nelson, Ky. In the 1850 Census Martha Carter age 19 was their eldest daughter, Jas Essex age 78 probable father in law, Lucenda Carter age 15, Tho Carter age 9, Sora Carter age 8 and J.J. Carter age 5 were in the household. In the 1840 Census there was another female listed which could have been their mother. It was not Martha, she married Malachi Styron April 18, 1856 in Nelson, Ky.
